Urban Prints

I have produced a selection of graphics using a screen print style as I am considering using printing as a medium for my final major. I have based them off the theme of urban, and used a simple style using shapes and solid colours. I have made them slightly different by using only straight edges and lines for some designs, others using curved edges and some are more complex than others. Each design has a different subject matter to do with urban environments, therefore I can focus on different aspects of my overall theme.

The subject of this sample is a cityscape. I started off by looking up generic photos of cities and took an overall impression of a skyline. I chose to make the design very simple and only use flat roof buildings.

Another aspect of urban is transport which is what I have presented here, from the road and the car driving out of the circle to show its moving. Each design has a main colour for this I have chosen red, to reflect the sun setting in the background.

One of the most important and main subjects which art is based off when looking at modern/ urban is technology. Not only as the subject matter of the artwork, but also the way the art is created itself when made digitally. I used green because it relates to chemicals and also digital code which is usually in green. This is my favourite of the 5 pieces as I really like the composition, layout and symmetry in the piece as it all ties together well.

The thing that every city needs is money and economy, which is what helps fund the building and power. I used normal gold coins and dollar bills, as they are common imagery associated with money. Also the fact that most big cities are in America. I had the money going slightly out of the circle so it stands out and looks like its been thrown. The coins also get smaller so your eye is drawn to the centre.

The final print design is on engineering with is what builds, runs and keeps the city modern and ever changing. It also plays a big part in the type of imagery I'm looking at and using which is very industrial and metallic. I added in the standard city in the background and also some scaffolding and cogs, to represent the subject as a whole.
